Nokia Stoping Updating Apps For MeeGo, Symbian OS By 2014

Developers informed via email; no new apps will appear on the Nokia Store after 1st January 2014. Symbian OS will soon be stopped fully in getting new apps or further updates for your Symbian based apps. Nokia's developer team had sent out messages to app makers that the applications for the defunct ecosystem via Ovi (Nokia Store) will stop from 1st of January 2014 in publishing any further updates for Symbian Based OS. The email states: "If you have Symbian and MeeGo content in the Nokia Store, it will continue to be available for download to customers, and you will continue to receive download and revenue reports as well as payouts for downloaded content. However, starting January 1, 2014, you will no longer be able to publish any new content or update existing content for Symbian and MeeGo". Time to change the N9 and 808 PureView users in switching loyalties for a smarter OS (and brands too, if the windows  platform doesn't make you full fill yo...

LiMo Foundation Introduces LiMo 4 Linux-Based Smartphone OS

As Nokia going the way of WP7, increased attention is falling on the remaining “alternative” smartphone platforms still being developed. MeeGo may be up in the air for now, but what about the other games in town? The Linux-based LiMo platform continues to develop, with today marking the launch of LiMo version 4. You can think of LiMo as Android-by-committee. Though both are based upon a Linux core, LiMo avoids having any one company take the reigns of its development, collecting input from a consortium of partner companies. Major smartphone players like Samsung and Vodafone are teamed up with electronics giants including Panasonic and NEC.   LiMo 4 shows progress from what may have seemed more like a high-end feature phone project, to something resembling what we’d find in a proper smartphone. After all, the OS will now support multitasking, location-based features, and physical sensors; all add to the sort of platform flexibility we’re used to a...

Nokia’s S40 Replacement OS May Defend Against Android Feature Phones

As per news just came in a new Linux based mobile platform has been developed by Nokia for future phones. Th platform namely MEltemi, will run on low cost devices aimed largely at developing markets where Nokia has historically been strong. AS per their calculations the new OS may help Nokia remain competitive at the low as Android starts to scale down and become serious contender in the high volume feature phone space. Although Android isn't quite there yet, its proven versatility and appeal to mobile carriers suggest that it will eventually be adapted to run on even cheaper hardware. Nokia's platform strategy has gone through a dramatic upheaval over the past year. Before present CEO Stephen Elop took the reins, Nokia intended to use the Linux-based MeeGo operating system on high-end devices, Symbian on mid-range handsets, and S40 on feature phones. The Qt software development toolkit, which Nokia obtained in its 2008 acquisition of Trolltech, was going to enable...

Jolla Sailfish OS

A new OS by Jolla was introduced called Sailfish. Basically the new OS is a Linux based one and shares the mer core that was earlier used by MeeGo. As the news just came in it is going to be a completely open source one and will be able to run android apps. I don't know if it is possible but if it could be done I would be willing to do whatever to help it get done as I think this is a really cool OS with a different UI and real multitasking.
